Labour Markets in Germany and Spain: A Career Development Workshop for Students at BSBI Barcelona

BSBI’s Careers Service together with Barcelona campus team hosted an exclusive workshop on labour markets in Germany and Spain for its students on 26th September 2024. This activity offered invaluable insights into the intricacies of these two European job markets.

Students were given the opportunity to explore potential career paths, with discussions centred on the possibility of transferring from Barcelona to Berlin and securing employment in Spain.

The event began with an introduction to student services at the Barcelona campus, specifically focusing on JobTeaser, BSBI’s careers platform. Students were guided through its functionality, including how to book appointments for career development needs.

Following this, the workshop shifted its focus to the Spanish labour market. Josipa Musura, Campus Manager at BSBI Barcelona Campus, and Gianmarco Rossini, Student Welfare & Careers Officer at BSBI Barcelona Campus, provided practical advice on constructing effective CVs tailored to Spain’s job market. Key differences between local CV formats and those required by multinational companies were highlighted. Additionally, cultural factors, such as Spain’s linguistic diversity and how these differences impact hiring, were explored in detail.

Michael Ferenc, Careers Service Manager at BSBI, took the lead in discussing the German job market, emphasising the growing demand for a foreign workforce due to labour shortages. He elaborated on visa regulations, the typical German CV format, and common mistakes in CV construction. He also offered insights into German business culture and cultural nuances that international professionals should consider when seeking employment in the country.

The workshop received praise from students and staff alike. Hector Velasco Serrano, a Global MBA student, expressed his gratitude for the session, stating, “The workshop was very informative and helpful. Thanks to Gianmarco, Josipa and Michael, I now understand more about the market in both Barcelona and Berlin. I’m actually considering doing a semester in Berlin, and this workshop helped me get the information I needed.”

Gianmarco Rossini added, “The workshop has been a great opportunity to introduce students to our careers service and the exciting prospects of internships in Berlin. The atmosphere was collaborative, with a mutual interest in everyone’s experiences working or living abroad.”

This workshop provided students with a comprehensive understanding of both the Spanish and German job markets, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to take the next steps in their global careers.
