Olufunke Mercy Popoola is a lecturer at Berlin School of Business and Innovation (BSBI) in Berlin. Can you share a bit about yourself, your background and what drove you to pursue your doctorate internationally, particularly in Rome?
I am currently a lecturer in Berlin School of Business and Innovation (BSBI) in Berlin. I love reading and travelling. I received my bachelor’s in economics and education from the University of Ibadan in 2015. In 2018, I obtained master’s in economics from the same university. I have been passionate about furthering my studies, immediately after my master’s programme, I discovered there is still more to learn, the need to discover new things and develop fresh skills.
What specific preparations did you undertake to pursue your DBA degree abroad, and what were the main challenges you faced along the way?
I prepared three proposals for three different research topics, applied to different universities, and looked for supervisors who were interested in my work. The major challenge I faced then was the search for supervisors who were interested in my field. Also, leaving my home country and settling in a foreign land during the pandemic was quite challenging for me.
How would you describe your journey as a lecturer and DBA student at BSBI? What motivated you to do your doctorate while teaching?
It was awesome, I learnt, unlearnt and relearnt but I was determined never to quit. I would say search for experience motivated me. I had always wanted to have experience in teaching, and to make sure I am in the system before the end of my programme.
Reflecting on your DBA journey at BSBI, what were some of the main challenges you faced and how did you overcome them?
Let me tell you the truth, there is no smooth path to success. You will always face challenges. One of the challenges I faced was teaching and studying at the same time, at a point, I had no time for myself, coupled with the fact that I had other extracurricular activities even outside my studies in BSBI.
What key insights or skills did you gain during your DBA studies that have had a significant impact on your professional journey?
I had gained how to manage my time effectively, drive my project by planning and setting goals. I had learnt how to split my time between meeting, teaching, and projects. My writing skills have improved, my communication and presentation skills have also improved, because I always had to present my thesis to my supervisor at every scheduled appointment.

How did BSBI support you during your doctoral studies? Could you highlight any resources or opportunities that have been particularly beneficial to your academic and professional growth?
BSBI supported me through many ways. First, BSBI has equipped research facilities with access to libraries and research platform like the ProQuest. This made my research quite easy. Secondly, I was offered quality guidance on coursework, research direction, and career planning. Third, BSBI paired me with experienced faculty members who offered me advice and support. Also, the workshops, seminars and conferences enhanced my skills in research, teaching, and writing.
Some of the resources or opportunities I benefited from include the academic conferences and seminars, I was given opportunity to present my research findings, receive feedback from peers and experts and established connections with scholars in my field. I received some professional certifications, had access to academic journals, databases and electronic resources for literature review, research and stayed connected with the recent development in my field.
As someone who has experienced both teaching and learning at BSBI, what advice would you give to current and future students who want to excel in their academic and professional endeavours?
I would like to say that determination is key to success. Once, you are determined, you can go far. I will only deceive you if I say that you will face no challenge, you just need to keep on pushing. There is still more to be discovered. Do the work, put in the effort, stay focused and do not make excuses.
From your unique perspective as a lecturer and a DBA graduate, what is the most crucial role of BSBI in shaping future leaders?
The education and training everyone receives at BSBI equips us with the skills and knowledge we need to make an impact in the world. In addition, BSBI brings students and faculty from diverse backgrounds, culture and disciplines exposing us to wide range of perspectives and Ideas.
