BSBI hosts 11th Responsible Management Education Research (RMER) Conference
The 11th Responsible Management Education Research (RMER) Conference, hosted by the Berlin School of Business and Innovation (BSBI) in collaboration with PRME took place from the 23rd up to the 26th September 2024. Titled “Doing the Next Step: Responsible Management Education between Transforming and Radicalizing,” the event aimed to explore frameworks and strategies that will guide business schools towards a sustainable future. The conference was attended by more than 100 participants from all continents and educational institutions, including scholars, researchers and students from the PRME Global Network and its Signatories as well as the PRME Champions 2024-25.
The conference featured three keynote speeches addressing key challenges in responsible management education. Prof. Dr. Kyriakos Kouveliotis, FRSA, Provost and Chief Academic Officer at BSBI, opened the event with his keynote, “The Global Degree Proposal: A New Institutional Model for Higher Education,” exploring how global changes in higher education can better prepare future leaders. Silke Stremlau, Chair of the Sustainable Finance Council of the German Federal Government, discussed the delicate balance between compliance and governance in sustainable leadership. Prof. Dr. Elke Schüssler from Leuphana University Lüneburg focused on more radical Governance approaches for business and human rights, emphasizing the shift from management practice to ethical management education.

Workshops and Track Sessions were designed to tackle global challenges faced by business schools, including the need for more holistic management leaders. The PRME i5 program, a key component of the event, highlighted the necessity for business education to adapt to social, economic, and environmental issues. One featured workshop, titled “Positive Academia: British Journal of Management Idea Development,” provided participants with opportunities to explore how responsible management education can create more positive academic and real-world outcomes.
The conference also included two thought-provoking panel discussions. One celebrated the 10th anniversary of the PRME DACH Chapter, focusing on the future of responsible management education in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The other panel explored future collaboration between PRME and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), with discussions on strategies for promoting responsible business practices worldwide.
The 11th RMER Conference provided a comprehensive platform for participants to discuss the most pressing issues in responsible management education. By addressing the intersection of sustainable practices, ethical governance, and emerging technologies, the conference helped shape a roadmap for business schools to continue developing leaders capable of navigating a rapidly changing world. BSBI’s commitment to fostering responsible leadership and innovation in business education was reflected in its dedication to hosting transformative events like this, supporting the development of more holistic and forward-thinking global leaders.
