BSBI Lecturer Presents Research at ‘Academy of Management Conference’

On Friday 7 August, Professor Dr Manuel Barriga, MBA Programme Leader at Berlin School of Business and Innovation (BSBI), took part in the ‘Academy of Management Annual Meeting 2020’ held online from Vancouver.

The Academy of Management (AOM) is a preeminent professional association for management professors and PhD business students as well as social science academics and practitioners from other fields who value knowledge creation and application. Founded in 1936, this global community is nearly 20,000 strong and spans over 120 countries.

The Annual Meeting is the largest gathering of organisation scholars in the world, giving members the opportunity to network, share their research, learn about the latest management trends and improve their papers. Around 8,000 scholars compete to attend and present their work each year.

During the live event – this year dedicated to ‘Broadening our Sight’ – Professor Barriga presented his work around the topic, ‘Global Citizenship and the Grand Environmental Challenges’. He illustrated a framework for multinational firms to embrace global citizenship tenets that helps them deal with key global environmental issues.

During his presentation, Professor Barriga said: “Which are the grand environmental challenges of our time? There is increasing consensus among top scientific research networks – the world needs to deal urgently with nine interconnected issues, of which climate change is just one.

“The acidification of the oceans, loss of biodiversity, global fresh water use, atmospheric pollution etc. conform nine bio-physical Earth systems which should never be transgressed if life is to be preserved. This has tremendous implications for business, since corporations have a huge impact on each of those planetary environmental issues.”

His research was awarded by the main sustainability division at the conference. Professor Barriga went onto say: “It was a great honour to represent BSBI at this prestigious event; It is through quality work like this, recognised by the industry, that we can share the research-based teaching that BSBI students enjoy in their programmes.”
