AI skills in the workplace: they are most in demand in these professional fields
With the constant advances in technology, the requirements for job seekers on the job market are also changing. In addition to Word and Excel, the use of AI tools is increasingly becoming a required basic skill in the professional world. But in which professional fields are AI skills currently most in demand? We investigated this question at BSBI and analysed 8,882 job advertisements from 29 professional fields on the Stepstone job portal using ten AI keywords. The result is the top ten professional fields in which AI skills are currently most in demand.
IT industry continues to dominate demand for AI skills
AI skills are particularly in demand in professional fields that fall under the core business of almost every company. The IT sector dominates first place (2,306 job advertisements). The professional fields of sales and distribution (990 job advertisements) and engineering (969 job advertisements) follow at a considerable distance. Management (931 job adverts) and marketing (849 job adverts) share the midfield in fourth and fifth place.
Little need for AI expertise in science and logistics
One of the occupational fields in which AI plays only a minor role is the field of science. With a total of 410 job advertisements in which AI skills are required, the research sector is only in tenth place. It is closely followed by logistics (430 job advertisements) and the administration sector (439 job advertisements). The professional fields of consulting (591 job advertisements) and skilled trades (536 job advertisements) ranked sixth and seventh respectively.
Professional experience a must in more than 80 per cent of advertisements
Of all the job advertisements analysed with required AI skills, around 81 percent also require applicants to have professional experience. This is not an application criterion for an average of around 34 per cent of the job advertisements. At just under 90 per cent, engineering is the frontrunner among the professional fields that want job candidates with practical experience, closely followed by logistics. At 48 per cent, the latter occupational field also has the most job advertisements for career starters.
1 Some of the job advertisements are advertised for both experienced and inexperienced applicants, which is why the percentages do not add up to 100 per cent.
